Species Account:
We were back packing at Fish Pole Lake (by Iron Bog Lake in Custer County). While fishing at the lake on July 22, 2017, I heard a noise and looked across the bay (about 40-50 yards away) and 3 wolverines were coming down the hill side to get a drink from Fish Pole Lake. The first two came to the lake and got a quick drink, but the last one saw us and turned back up the hill out of sight. One of the two at the lake getting a drink then walked up the hill side and the other followed. About the time the two at the lake disappeared the third one came back into view and came down to the lake but didn't stop and followed the other two and went out of sight. We watched them for about 20-25 seconds. My guess is the two wolverines that got a drink, were kits and the mother is the one that turned around and then reappeared to get her kits out of there.
About 6 hours later my son was fishing at a different location at Fish Pole Lake and saw one wolverine again at the same location we spotted the 3 earlier. I ran over to observe, but the wolverine had already left. I am 50 years old and am an avid outdoorsman, and this was the first time I ever saw a wolverine. What a treat as I got to see 3 at the same time. The wolverines we observed by my son, a friend and myself.
