Species Account:
Single individual, that I suspect may have been a sub-adult, was traveling S along 2-track that runs under powerlines, just W and N of Herrick Reservoir. I watched individual for approx 20 seconds, from a distance of approx 80 yds. I thought it might be a very large badger at first, but clearly noted the long tail. Indiv was approx 3.5' in length. Was not as flat to the ground as a badger(which are more dish shaped), while this was a longer body. Had evident stripe down side, and was otherwise dark colored. It was NOT a bear and not long legged enough to be any kind of dog. Too thick and dark to be a fox. Basically looked like a HUGE mink with a stripe.
I was able to see it first walking away from me slightly uphill, then it turned and stood sideways, then turned and looked in my direction noticing me and watched me for a few long seconds. It seemed not overly concerned at my presence, likely due to my distance and the fact I was not moving, and then walked directly on the 2-track the final 10-15 yards up a steep hill and over. I then proceeded to the spot i last saw it and did not find it again(somewhat thankfully).
I did almost immediately use a tablet to look up and review pictures to confirm what I saw. It did not appear quite as big as many of the pictures, but I attributed that in part to the fluffy winter coat that show in many pictures, and also it struck me that it might be a sub-adult and slightly smaller framed than some. I can see why some appear more small bear like, than big weasel like this one. I was suprised by the proximity to residences as this was very close to the cabins of Clear Creek area, probably no more than a few hundred yards East of 2-track, but again makes some sense if it was younger.
Animal was clearly sniffing and searching until and after it looked me over. It seemed to head E off trail, but not confident due to it leaving site over top of hill.
For some background on me, I am a seasoned hunter. I have seen likely a hundred badgers, over 100 bears, 3 seperate wolf packs, 100 red and 25 grey foxes, 100 bobcats, 25 River Otter's, aand literally a thousand coyotes in my life. I took the time to even consult with Bill London, a friend, to discuss before this report, so unless there is another 30-40lb weasel that is dark with a lite stripe I'm sure of what I saw. Now, one thing I was shocked at, is I would have expected a very strong odor when I traveled over where it had been a minute prior but did not smell anything. I do not remember a significant wind or the direction of the wind at that time, likely 8:30-9:00pm.
Feel free to call if you want more specific directions to it's exact location.
