Species Account:
While driving north on hwy 28 near Tendoy, My wife and I both observed a light grey wolf about 80 to 100 lbs. in a pasture near milepost 117 (Muleshoe Ranch). At first I assumed it was a coyote mousing in the short stubble of the field, but as I got within 50 to 60 yards I could see it was much larger than a coyote. I stopped and watched it for about 20 seconds as it stood still. I have seen and hunted many coyotes for more than 50 years and it was clearly not a coyote. It had a square, blocky face, husky type body and stout limbs. After about 20-30 seconds it ran off into a treeline. The last time I saw wolves was about 2002 in Northfork, Idaho on our family ranch. We video-taped a pack of 5 wolves that hung around for almost 3 hours, so I am familiar with them.
