Species Account:
young, <1 year, standard mule deer coloration, "button buck" undescended testicles. I was only going about 45 and he darted out from the hill-side of the curve (n-side of the road) and I wasn't going to swerve into the Lochsa to prevent the collision. Hit his head, spray of blood was very evident. I turned around at the entrance to Lochsa Lodge and returned to drag his carcass off and assess the situation. He was right by a pull-out so I deemed it safe, parked safely off the highway, and dragged him clear of the road. His neck was broken and left front foreleg so I cut his jugular with my pocketknife and waited for him to bleed out at the farthest edge of the gravel in the pullout, waited about about 15-20 minutes until he stopped twitching and breathing, then put the carcass in the back of my pickup. I returned to the MT side of the pass and took a gravel road I was familiar with far enough up from regularly trafficked areas and gutted him.
