Abstract:

These five memos [emails] discuss numbers of bats that emerged from bat houses on 17 September 2014 and at other times at Ball Creek Ranch. The bat houses were erected earlier in 2014 to mitigate for removing the deteriorated bat houses on the ranch house when the roof there was replaced. The memos also discuss the species that have been observed at Ball Creek Ranch. Taylor reports that on 17 September 2014, 165 bats were counted. They were Myotis species. One bat flying by was a big brown myotis. Taylor remembered mistnetting at the house "several years ago" (when the bat houses were on the house) and that Ed Buchler counted perhaps 45 bats in the net; they were little brown bats and were released. Taylor asks Ed if her memory is correct that he counted >700 bats emerging from boxes on the ranch house 2 or 3 years back (i.e., in 2011 or 2012). Buchler recently lost emails in a crash of back up servers and so doesn't have the information from that time. He names a couple of people who might still have the information and mentions that he thinks he also sent it to Rita for the state [Heritage] data base. According to his memory, there were "400+ bats [counted at the ranch house] in about 2002" and "2000+ bats in about 2009."
