Abstract:

The Idaho ground squirrel, Spermophilus brunneus, is the only species of the mammal that occurs only in Idaho. However, little is currently known about this species, except that it has a very restricted distribution in west-central Idaho. The species was listed as a "species of concern" by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service (1978), primarily as a result of its limited range. This study was undertaken to learn more about the taxonomic status, exact distribution, habitat preferences, population status, and potential threats to the species. Further, this report reviews everything currently known about the species in order to arrive at a recommendation about the status of the species.
