Abstract:

Playback surveys for boreal owls (Aegolius funereus) were conducted along approximately 147 km of road on the Avery and St. Maries Ranger Districts from 26 February to 16 April, 1992. Boreal owls were heard 22 times at 16 locations on U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, and Plum Creek Timber Company land at elevations from 4800 to 6400 ft. Eight calling locations mapped to specific forest stands were in mountain hemlock (Tsuga mertensia), subalpine fir (Abies lasiocarpa), and western redcedar (Thuja plicata) habitat types, and mountain hemlock-subalpine fir and Engelmann spruce (Picea engelmanii)-subalpine fir forest types. Four of the stands had been selectively logged. Recommendations include modifying routes and continuing surveys to better document boreal owl occurrence and habitat use in this area.
