Black Bear Monitoring

This project with the University of Idaho is designed to develop camera-based methods for monitoring black bear populations and to gather data on black bear habitat selection, movements, and interactions with other species to be incorporated in the predator-prey project.

We are also using GPS-collared bears and cameras in GMUs 6, 10A, and 32A, and estimates of berry production across these GMUs, to understand factors that affect annual bear reproduction.

We plan to use this information to help us predict future black bear population changes and help inform management.
