Can residents apply as nonresidents for controlled hunts?

A:

The direct answer is No but to help us better answer your question, please provide more information on why a resident would want to submit an application as a nonresident. Thank you.

Q: Land locked salmon

Is f&g planing on planting fall chinook in Anderson ranch res. and deadwood res. in 2014? Where dose the blood line of fall chinook that you are planting come from? Any info on the survival rate of previous years stockings? Thanx

A:

We will probably stock fall Chinook in Deadwood Reservoir again this year to help reduce the kokanee population, but we probably won't stock Anderson Ranch with fall Chinook.  Anderson Ranch was drawn-down this past winter and we know kokanee went through the dam.  Until we have a better idea of how many kokanee still exist, we will "hold" our fall Chinook plant. The source of eggs for fall Chinook is a state hatchery in Washington.  These are fish excess to their hatchery needs. Fall Chinook in reservoirs are difficult to sample, therefore we don't have survival information.  In the case of Deadwood, we continue adding fall Chinook every year until the kokanee population reaches the desired/target size.

Q: How do I know if I have drawn on a super tag after they have been drawn?

How do I know if I have drawn on a super tag after they have been drawn? Is there a place on the internet where I could check?

A:

After the super hunt drawing has been completed, our License Section contacts each individual to let them know they have drawn a super hunt tag.

Q: Rain check on a draw tag

We drew antelope tags last year for unit 39. The Friday before the season opened my buddy had to have emeregency heart bypass surg. He turned in his raincheck paperwork with the doctors note two weeks after the season started (he was in the hosp). He has never heard anything back from IFG about the raincheck. He paid for his tag and was not able to use it because of a unforeseen emeregency medical issue. Should this be graounds for a raincheck. This tag is hard to get, in the first place.

A:

Your friend will need to contact our license section at 334-2592. Thank you.

Q: South Fork of the Salmon Sportsman Quota?

Happy Monday. Can we get an update on what is the expected sportsman quota for the south fork of the salmon and main salmon/rapid river hatchery? I see the numbers are still looking good coming over bonneville dam for the mccall hatchery. What percent of the fish have a PIT tag? Thanks for the help!! Josh

A:

As of this morning (6/18) the estimated harvestable sport-angling share is 780 adults.  This is based on the PIT data which generated a population estimate at Bonneville Dam.  As more PIT tagged fish are detected at Lower Granite Dam (upper-most dam where Salmon River fish are monitored) the quota will be adjusted accordingly.

Q: Catfishing in the Magic Valley

What is the catch and possession limit on catfish?

A:

In Idaho, there is no limit on the number of catfish you can catch and keep. There is nothing finer than sitting on the riverbank in the spring fishing for catfish.  Whether it's fishing with bait or fly fishing (yes, they will take flies in the spring) it's a low stress venture. In the Magic Valley area, give Dog Creek Reservoir (Gooding area) or Milner Reservoir (Burley) a try.

Q: Skunk release

Example: I've trapped a skunk in my yard. I live in a neighborhood with families and pets. Where do you release the skunk?

A:

Predatory and unprotected wildlife can be released on private property after getting written permission from the landowner, other wise call Fish and Game to get permission to release the animal.

Q: Possession limit on Salmon that have been packaged for consumption.

Hello. I have question pertaining to the possession limit on salmon. I was lucky enough to harvest 6 fish at Riggins last weekend and took them to a local fish processor who filleted and froze them. I plan to go fishing again next weekend and plan to pick up my processed fish. If I catch fish will I be over the possession limit or are there any considerations for processed fish? Thank you.

A:

Any processed Salmon count towards an angler's possession limit while in the field or in transit. No person shall have in the field or in transit hatchery-produced adult anadromous salmon that has been processed by removing the head and tail unless the following conditions are met: The fish has been recorded on the taker’s salmon permit; The fish is processed and packaged with the skin naturally attached to the flesh including a portion with a healed, clipped, adipose fin scar; and The fish must be packaged in a manner that the number of fish harvested can be readily determined. No person shall process salmon until they are ashore and done fishing for the day. No person shall transport processed salmon via boat. Jack salmon may not be processed while in the field or in transit. Any processed salmon count towards an angler’s possession limit while in the field or in transit.

Q: Trapping rabbits

Hunting season for cottontail is over but i just got my trapping license and i would like to trap them do i need to wait till next years hunting season before i can ?

A:

Trapping of upland game animals is not a legal method of take.  You can hunt cottontails during the hunting season, but trapping them at any time is unlawful unless they are in your garden or destroying personal property.  You are allowed to control depredations, but you should contact your Regional Fish and Game office to obtain a permit if that is the case.

Q: Can a controlled hunt tag be filled early in a general hunt?

If I draw for an any weapon controlled hunt, can I fill that tag with an early season general archery hunt?

A:

No. If you purchase the controlled hunt tag, you are restricted to the hunt area and dates of the controlled hunt for the tag you possess. Any person who has purchased a controlled hunt tag is prohibited from hunting in any other hunt for the same species (archery, muzzleloader or general) except when the hunter holds an extra controlled hunt tag or purchases a nonresident general season tag as a second tag for the same species.

Q: soldiers meadow reservoir

since IDFG poisoned all the fish in soldiers meadows, is there any plan at all plant crappie back in the reservoir?...the only reason i went to soldiers meadow was to catch good eating crappie and would like to continue fishing there and so would alot of other poeple I know.... and please if your not going to stock crappie, please put something in there besides trout.

A:

This winter and spring we held public meetings, sent out e-mails (over 800) and posted notices in the newspaper to get input on which fish people would like to see the reservoir managed for in the future.  Based on public response we have decided to manage Soldiers Meadow Resrvoir for Kokanee.  This spring we stocked fingerling Kokanee into the reservoir, and by 2016 these fish should be big enough to provide a fishery.  We will also stock a limited number of sterile rainbow trout to provide some shore fishing oppotunities. If you have further questions, feel free to give me a call. Joe DuPont, 208-799-5010.

Q: Who records the harvest?

If I and my buddy are fishing for Steelhead or Salmon, both of us with the appropriate license and permit, and say I hook a Steelhead or Salmon and I give my pole to my buddy to fight the fish and reel it in (because he's never caught one before), who records the harvested fish, the person who hooked the fish or the person who lands the fish?

A:

The person who hooks (sets the hook) the fish must record it on their permit.

Q: Fishing Mink Creek near Pocatello

How is the fishing in Mink Creek near Pocatello? My kids prefer stream fishing to pond fishing. Looking at the stocking history it's been eight years since anything's been stocked, plus with all the dense growth it could be hard to find accessible water.

A:

The fishing on mink creek is fair. You are correct, in many areas the riparian corridor is quite thick making it difficult for young children to fish there. However, the Cherry Springs area would be a good starting point as well as several areas on the EF of Mink Creek. These areas are visible from the road and provide semi-open areas that kids should be able to negotiate.

Q: Antelope [Pronghorn] in Round Valley?

A co-worker of mine said that he saw 2 antelope in Round Valley around milepost 102 on highway 55. Did the F&G bring these in?

A:

Hello, and thanks for your report.  These pronghorn must be making themselves quite visible, as we've had several reports of them.  No, we did not bring them here - they must have found their way up on their own.  They should be fine for the summer - Round Valley has nice summer pronghorn habitat - but will definitely need to head elsewhere for winter.  Please let us know if you have any further questions. Q: Where is it legal to clean your fish?

Where is it legal to clean your fish?

A:

This is not as easy of question as you might think and there are no specific rules on when or where you must clean your fish. You can actually remove the internal organs and gills anytime after reducing your fish to possession.  If you are in a boat, it's ok to throw the fish parts back into the water.  Birds, fish, or crayfish will consume the organic matter in short-order.  Once you are on shore, we recommend putting intrals into a trash container.  Many people don't appreciate fish guts scattered on docks or boat loading areas - so this is a bad place to dispose of your internal fish parts.  In high use areas, some Marine Deputies interpret throwing intrals into the water as "littering" and you run the risk of being cited.  This is also a place where dogs are found and you don't want them eating or rolling in this smelly material, as well.  I actually take ziplock bags and take the fish guts home and bury them in my garden for fertilizer. When you clean game fish, the heads and tails must remain attached to the fish until they reach the location where they will be consumed.  There is an exception in the rules for salmon and steelhead that allows heads and tails to be removed if other conditions are met.

Q: Controlled draw results

When do the controlled deer draw results come out?

A:

The controlled hunt deer, elk, pronghorn, bear, and turkey drawing will be completed and winners notified by July 10th. We're hoping to beat that date, but several things need to fall into place first. Once the results are available, there will be a news release and a note stating the draw results are available will appear at http://fishandgame.idaho.gov. This time, unlike in the past, the drawing results will be made available as soon as they are ready on the website. In the past, some folks learned that they could call into the offices to lookup results. You'll just need your hunting license number to look them up online. Good luck.

Q: License refund

I purchased a small game hunting license for $98 thinking it was the one I needed to put in for non resident draw. I called the IFG office and asked them to cancel it which they did, then I purchased the correct license with the 3 free fishing days. How do I get my refund for the first license since my new license covers the small game hunting? IFG office would not refund my card on the phone and would not give me an answer as to how to get my money back?

A:

Please send in your small game hunting license with a written request for the refund to: IDFG License SectionP.O. Box 25Boise, ID 83707 Thank you.

Q: Map for River closures

Will you create a map of the Clearwater that looks like the one you have for the Little Salmon River that will highlight the closed sections of river to adult chinook harvest?

A:

Because the Chinook seasons are modified frequently to allow as much angler opportunty as possible, a season map would be outdated very quickly.  However, the Interactive Season Map available at http://fishandgame.idaho.gov/ifwis/fishingplanner/chinook includes a visual map of current river sections open/closed to adult harvest and related season information for each river section.

Q: Carrying a firearm on a four-wheeler while hunting

I have heard that it is now illegal to have a firearm on a four-wheeler while hunting is this true?

A:

Nothing in our rules prohibit citizens of the United States who are residents of the state of Idaho from carrying arms for the protection of life and property. It has always been legal to have a firearm on a four-wheeler while hunting.   Please review out Big Game seasons and rule book for information regarding our motorized hunting rule.

Q: Do you have to have your dog chained up while in the mountains?

Do you have to have your dog chained up while in the mountains?

A:

The land management agency usually has rules regarding dogs at large.  For instance most United States Forest Service Districts require leashs in their developed camping areas.  Idaho Department of Fish and Game has rules for Wildlife Management Areas that do not permit dogs or other domestic animals to run at large when the owner or guardian is not present to control or care for them or to permit dogs to be off leash or conduct dog training when prohibited by posted notice.  Contact the land manager responsible for the land in question to obtain the approprate rules for that area.

A:

In Idaho,  the wolf trapping course is required to trap wolves. The basic trapper education course is not required.  Participants can register for both courses on our website on the hunter education page. If you cannot find a course in your area, contact your local Fish and Game office and ask to speak with the hunter education coordinator to inquire about upcoming courses.

Q: Landowner Tags

Now that the comment period is over for proposed new landowner rules, where do I find out if they passed and when they take effect?

A:

The Department will review the comments received via the website and those collected at public meetings to develop a recommended course of action.  The Commission will be briefed on the results of the public comment and asked for further direction, including consideration of the Department's recommended course of action.  Should the Commission want to proceed with adopting rules, the Department would prepare detailed rule language which will be made available for public review prior to the Commission meeting.  Additionally, the Commission will solicit public testimony on any proposed rules prior to considering them for adoption.  Updates to the process will be announced via newspaper and our website.

Q: Refund for unsuccessful application

When will credit cards for unsuccessful controlled hunt applications be credited (specifically, a sheep app)?

A:

Credits to cards used by those who applied via Internet or telesales are being made. Our contractor must manually apply the credit to the card used for the application. This year there are over 2,300 credits to be applied. The contractor who provides our license system will be working through June to apply those credits.
