As hunters start to scope out their favorite hunting spots, Fish and Game is urging hunters to check out all of the new hunting unit boundary changes and new changes to rules and laws. Here’s what hunters should know about the changes made to hunting unit modifications and new changes to rules and laws effective July 1.

Trash can lids make awkward necklaces for deer
Late last week, Fish and Game's McCall office received a flurry of calls about a mule deer doe with a trash can lid stuck on her neck. Sure enough, when staff went to check things out, she was wearing a large, metal lid.

Homedale angler hoists up a new catch-and-release record, just an inch longer than his previous record
Congratulations to Jared Holt of Homedale for catching a new state catch-and-release record for flathead catfish from the Snake River in Owyhee County. Holt hauled up the behemoth catfish on July 9 on the Snake River.

Idaho sockeye returns at Lower Granite Dam are already the second-highest in a decade
Updated: Through mid July (July 17), 1,535 sockeye have crossed Lower Granite Dam located about 30 miles downstream from Lewiston. The run is already the second-highest in the last decade and third-highest since 1975 with more fish expected to cross in the coming days and weeks.

Parr: Another funny word biologists use to describe young salmon and trout
What does "parr" mean? It is that spots that form camouflage and break up the outline of the young fish so it blends in more easily into the gravel and shadows in a stream. Capped elk zones – except the Sawtooth Zone – will go on sale July 11 at 10 a.m. Mountain Daylight Time where any Fish and Game licenses are sold. The Sawtooth Zone elk tags will go on sale July 13 at 10 a.m. MDT for in-person purchases and 1 p.m. MDT for online purchases. Sawtooth tags will be evenly divided between in-person and online sales.
