Trails and cabins improve public access to Craig Mountain Wildlife Management Area

Craig Mountain is Fish and Game's largest wildlife management area and provides good hunting opportunities

Craig Mountain Wildlife Management Area is a 124,000-acres south of Lewiston and along the breaks of the Snake River and Hells Canyon. With a 7,900-foot elevation drop from its highest mountain peak down to the Snake River, trails are essential to access all that the WMA has to offer for hunters and other recreationists.

Craig Mountain is among 31 Fish and Game Wildlife Management Areas across the state that provide important wildlife habitat and public access for fishing, hunting, trapping and other recreation.

A mid-elevation trail was recently restored at Craig Mountain to improve hunting and fishing access on the WMA. The trail system also connects six user cabins, access site facilities and corrals to further improve the user's experience and provide an opportunity for overnight stays. Cabins are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and there is no charge.

Rustic cabins provide shelter for hunters and the general public who are visiting the WMA. Be prepared to put in some time and effort to reach them, as the trails to the cabins are all non-motorized and required some long and arduous hikes with large drops and gains in elevation.
