Livestock Killing Grizzly Bear Euthanized

idfg-mdemick
On Sunday, August 10, 2014 the Idaho Department of Fish & Game, with the permission of the United States Fish & Wildlife Service, euthanized an adult male grizzly bear that had been responsible for a series of livestock killings in the Island Park, Idaho. The grizzly bear was trapped by Wildlife Services, a division of the United States Department of Agriculture. Per a long standing Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), Wildlife Services is contacted whenever a predator is thought to be responsible for the death of domestic livestock. The depredations had occurred on the portion of Harriman State Park that is located west of Island Park Reservoir. Because of the age and history of the bear involved, the decision was made to remove the bear. Once bears have learned to key in on a specific food source it is highly likely they will continue the behavior, even if moved to other locations.
