Idaho Fish and Game

Free Fishing Day Is June 9!

idfg-staff
Saturday, June 9 is Free Fishing Day throughout the Gem State, and the Idaho Department of Fish and Game invites all anglers, old and new, resident and nonresident alike, to fish anywhere in the state that day without a fishing license! All other fishing regulations pertaining to bag limits, method of take, and size limits are still in effect. In the Magic Valley Region, however, fish limits have been removed from several waters. There are currently no limits on Thorn Creek, Little Camas, Fish Creek, and Magic Reservoirs or on Lava Lake. Size restrictions have also been removed. In addition, fish limits have been removed on the Big Wood River from Magic Dam downstream to the Richfield Canal Diversion. Fish must be taken by standard rod and reel outfits. At this time there are no salvage operations planned for any regional reservoirs or lakes. "Free fishing day provides a great opportunity for novices to give fishing a try and perhaps develop it into a life-long pursuit," Regional Fish Manager Fred Partridge said. "Parents are encouraged to bring their children out for a day of fun and excitement." A special Free Fishing Day Clinic will be held at the Hagerman State Fish Hatchery on June 9, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. This event is hosted by the Department of Fish and Game, the Magic Valley Bassmasters, Idaho Walleye Unlimited, Boy Scout Troop #108, and the Hagerman National Fish Hatchery. Sponsors include Pepsi-Cola, Falls Brand Meats, Albertson's, South Bend, Inc., and Shakespeare, Inc. There will be free hot dogs and Pepsi for as long as they last. Rods, reels and tackle will also be available for those true novices who do not have fishing gear. Free Fishing Day has been celebrated in Idaho since 1985.
