In late November, staff from Idaho Fish and Game, Magic Valley Region, partnered with the Idaho Division of Veteran Services to provide an opportunity for disabled American veterans (DAV) to enjoy a day of mentored waterfowl hunting. This year, two veterans participated in a Commission-approved mentored duck hunt at the Hagerman Wildlife Management Area.
Idaho Fish and Game will host an open house in Salmon for hunters, trappers and other interested parties to comment on the proposals for the 2022-23 Upland Game, Turkey & Furbearer Seasons and Rules. The open house will held from 3 to 6 p.m. at the IDFG Salmon Regional office at 99 Highway 93 North.
Regional turkey season proposals include increasing the number of spring season youth-only controlled hunt tags, increasing Spring and Fall controlled hunt tags, and changing the Fall controlled hunt season opening date in Units 21, 21A, 29, 30, and a portion of Unit 28. Trapping proposals include eliminating the river otter trapping closure on the Salmon River downstream from North Fork, as well as the beaver trapping closures in the Dahlonega Creek and Marsh Creek drainages.
People can also see the proposals and comment online by visiting the Public Comment section of Fish and Game website. The comment period is open until Dec. 10.
During the past week on the upper Salmon River, steelhead angler effort and catch rates were similar to what was observed two weeks ago. The majority of anglers continued to be found either downstream of North Fork in location code 15 or upstream of North Fork in location code 16. Angler effort in other areas of the upper Salmon River was low.
Anglers interviewed downstream of the Middle Fork Salmon River in location code 14 averaged 21 hours per steelhead caught, and anglers interviewed downstream of North Fork in location code 15 averaged 22 hours per steelhead caught. Anglers interviewed downstream of the Lemhi River in location code 16 averaged 25 hours per steelhead caught, and anglers interviewed downstream of the Pahsimeroi River in location code 17 averaged 12 hours per steelhead caught.

The Magic Valley Region will host an open house at the regional office at 324 South 417 East - Suite 1 on Tuesday, Dec. 7 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Nearly 75 people participated in a recent Pelt Preparation demonstration day in North Idaho. Participants in the class met other trappers and learned to skin, flesh and stretch a variety of pelts.
Idaho Fish and Game has received information about a 6x6 bull elk that was shot with a firearm and left to waste near Heyburn State Park in the Panhandle Region. Fish and Game is requesting the public to report any information about the incident.
Hatchery personnel from Fish and Game’s Magic Valley Region will be stocking approximately 900 10-12” catchable-sized rainbow trout in December. All stocking dates and numbers of fish are approximate and may change without notice due to water or weather conditions.

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game will be offering a new trial opportunity for mountain lion hunting with hounds on Craig Mountain Wildlife Management Area (WMA). Starting December 2nd, hound hunters will have the opportunity to check out a key that allows them to access routes that are located behind locked gates. These routes are normally closed to protect wintering big game and other wildlife. However, during the mountain lion hound hunting season (December 2 to March 31st), hound hunters can check out a key to one of five routes on Craig Mountain WMA (map posted below). Maps can also be picked up the Lewiston Regional office.
