Fisheries biologists completed their annual kokanee monitoring effort on Ririe Reservoir in early June. We estimated the second highest catch rates since our annual monitoring program for kokanee began in 2015. Anglers are also reporting excellent catch rates for Smallmouth Bass when fishing points, boulder drop-offs, and rocky, steep banks.

Man injured by grizzly bear after encountering a female with a cub

A man was attacked by a grizzly bear early Friday, July 9, in the Kilgore area near Island Park in Eastern Idaho. The man was injured in the attack, but able to return to the cabin he was staying in and call 911. His injuries were not life threatening, and he was treated at Madison Memorial Hospital in Rexburg.

Dry conditions around the state have made the potential for wildfires extremely high. “Our Wildlife Management Areas (WMA’s) are vital to sustaining wildlife and wildlife-based recreation in the region,” says Habitat Manager Rob Cavallaro. “Sand Creek and Tex Creek WMAs alone support 9,000 elk, 5500 mule deer, and 900 moose during winter. A catastrophic wildfire on these lands has the potential to significantly impact wildlife populations”.
