GPS collars allow biologists to monitor big game animals 24/7 and better understand what drives larger populations
Wednesday, January 6, 2021 - 2:08 PM MSTFish and Game crews have spent thousands of hours capturing adult and young deer, elk, pronghorn and other big game and fitting them with GPS tracking collars. The collars are a critical tool that not only show an animal’s location, but whether it’s alive, and if it dies, a biologist can find the animal and determine what likely killed it. That helps biologists better understand the driving forces behind big game populations and become better wildlife managers.

Idaho moose research shows potential causes of recent declines

Adult survival so far has been better than expected, but populations are still declining in the long term. They hope more research will provide clues on how to help Idaho’s largest big game animal rebound, or at least, discover what’s causing their decline in Idaho and beyond.
