About the position
The Large Lakes Research team is seeking a Fisheries Technician to conduct creel surveys on Lake Pend Oreille (LPO). This non-benefitted position will run from May 15 through October 15.
General Information:
The technician will work as a member of a fisheries research team conducting creel (angler) surveys on LPO. The schedule will be randomized and days and times will change regularly, but weekends will be a regular part of the schedule. The incumbent must be able to, with or without reasonable accommodations, work outdoors in inclement weather, stand or walk for long periods of time, handle dead or living fish, work weekends and holidays on a regular basis, and possess a valid driver’s license.
Responsibilities:
The incumbent will primarily be responsible for interviewing parties returning to lake access points and recording data on fishing effort and catch. Catch data will include biological data from harvested fish, such as length, weight, scales, spines and otoliths. The incumbent must ensure that recorded data are accurate and legible.
Qualifications:
Applicants must possess some knowledge of resident fish species and recreational fishing. Applicants must be able to accurately collect data following set protocols, work well with a team or independently, and be able to interact with the public in a professional and courteous manner. A valid driver’s license is required. Experience using MS Access or similar software is a plus. Education and professional experience in fisheries or natural resource management is preferred.
