About the position

The Southwest Region is seeking to fill two (2) Wildlife Technician positions out of the Nampa office that will assist with surveying locations of Merriam’s ground squirrel colonies in southwest Idaho. Fieldwork is primarily systematic distance-based line transect surveys to search for new colonies and live trapping for mark-recapture and genetic studies at known existing colonies. One or both of these positions could potentially be extended and include other nongame wildlife fieldwork.

General Information:
Applicants must be able to work outdoors early in the day and under a range of environmental conditions, hike for 4+ hours across moderate terrain, follow established protocols, and be flexible with working hours. Applicants must have good eyesight and high-frequency hearing to effectively detect small mammals with or without reasonable accommodations. Applicants should have experience with or be comfortable in handling, restraining, and collecting genetic samples from live small mammals. The weekly work schedule is entirely weather-dependent and applicants must be willing to flex their workdays. Ground squirrel survey, capture and handling techniques will be provided. Applicants must secure their own housing. Extended nongame fieldwork could include more difficult terrain and hiking conditions.
Responsibilities:
Technicians will be part of a crew of two to three people conducting line-transect distance-based surveys, in addition to trapping, sampling, and tagging ground squirrels. Additional responsibilities include maintaining accurate field records, entering and proofing survey and waypoint data, tracking progress on completing target surveys and data summary.
Qualifications:
It is preferred that applicants have a B.S. degree in biological sciences, natural resources, or related field, with some field experience OR demonstrated field experience with small mammal surveys or trapping. Some experience driving 4WD pickup trucks and ATV/UTV is also preferred. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license.
