About the position

The Magic Valley Regional Office is seeking a Fisheries Technician to assist the fisheries management program with field sampling and data collection in Jerome, Idaho. The objective of this program is to create, enhance, and maintain high quality recreational fishing opportunity throughout the region. This position will involve mountain lake surveys, boat/backpack electro-fishing, hatchery/wild fish tagging, conducting creel surveys, and monitoring fish populations. The Magic Valley Region offers a vast array of recreational opportunities including hunting, fishing, biking, hiking, base jumping, kayaking, golfing, rock climbing, and whitewater rafting.

Positions Available/Dates Needed:

One 5 month non-benefited technician (annual hours not to exceed 1385) – Approximately May 1st to September 30th, 2020 (dates somewhat flexible).

General Information: 
Applicants must (with or without reasonable accommodations) work in inclement weather for long periods of time, handle live and dead fish, be able to hike long distances in rough terrain, stand/work in cold water for long periods of time, lift/carry up to 60 lbs, and work effectively as a group and interdependently.
Responsibilities: 
Technician will lead fishery management surveys in various water bodies throughout the region and manage associated sampling data. Incumbents should be comfortable and confident leading a crew in the use of common fish sampling techniques including boat and backpack electro-fishing, fish tagging equipment, and using a variety of netting equipment (e.g. gill nets and trap nets). Incumbents should also be comfortable using power boats, and will be expected to perform general operation and maintenance of equipment, boats, and vehicles. Incumbents will also be expected to assist fishery biologists with data analyses and report writing somewhat.
Qualifications: 
It is preferred that applicants have a bachelor's degree in fisheries management, ecology, environmental studies, or a related field; or equivalent in training and experience. The ability to maintain a positive attitude and an uncompromising work ethic through uncomfortable conditions is very important. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license.
