About the position

The Department of Fish and Game seeks a Software Engineer III to join an interdisciplinary group of developers, GIS Analysts, and Data Coordinators within our Idaho Fish and Wildlife Information System (IFWIS) at our Headquarters office in Boise, Idaho. The IFWIS team works behind the scenes to turn data into information and create digital solutions to further our Agencies mission to "...preserve, protect, perpetuate, and manage" our wildlife resources.

The successful Software Engineer III will be an IFWIS team member within one of the premier natural resource agencies in the country. Their primary responsibility will be to develop and maintain web and mobile data systems for the IFWIS Species Diversity (Natural Heritage) Data Program. They could have a combination of skills within Geographic Information Systems or biological sciences as well. This team member will support the development and maintenance of agency databases, administer Enterprise ArcGIS, support mobile data collection efforts, and numerous Web GIS applications.

Responsibilities:

The candidate will be expected to develop web and mobile applications, databases, and RESTful services as part of a comprehensive information system. Using design to translate complicated data and information into intuitive products is a team goal. Experience with data collection, data display, and GIS are a benefit. A willingness and ability to learn is an important, desired trait.

The successful applicant will work in an interdisciplinary group of developers, GIS Analysts, and data managers in a team environment. This position will work closely with Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) biologists and data managers in the IDFG Wildlife Diversity Program. There will be opportunities to accompany IDFG biologists into the field on a variety of conservation and research tasks to learn first-hand how they collect data.

Minimum Qualifications: (These qualifications are required.)

  • Considerable knowledge of data architecture, software architecture, common software design patterns, development and testing practices; programming languages and software development tool suites.
  • Experience creating, interpreting and documenting user requirements; analyzing development solutions to show costs and benefits; coding, testing and deploying production systems; establishing and defining architecture and development standards.

Desirable Qualifications: (These qualifications are not required.)

  • Some knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
  • Experience in a biological science field.
