About the position

The Sawtooth Fish Hatchery is seeking two (2) Fishery Technicians - Trap Tenders (non-benefited) to trap and spawn steelhead at a remote satellite facility on the East Fork of the Salmon River.

Dates Needed: March 12, 2018 through May 25, 2018.

General Information: 
Incumbents will be based at the Sawtooth Fish Hatchery in Stanley, but will require working independently, traveling, and overnight stays at a remote satellite facility on the East Fork of the Salmon River. Dormitory style housing is provided free of charge at both locations. With or without reasonable accommodations, incumbents must be able to stand and work in cold water for up to five hours per shift; lifting and carrying equipment weighing up to 60 pounds; and working in extreme weather conditions.

Incumbents will work 40 hours per week. Work hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Weekend work rotation is required.
Responsibilities: 
Operate and maintain a steelhead trout trap and spawning station located in a remote area on the East Fork of the Salmon River. Sort, organize, and inventory fish in the trap. Collect biological samples and spawn steelhead trout. Maintain trapping records and data entry. Other responsibilities will include: assisting in the trapping and spawning of steelhead trout at the Sawtooth Fish Hatchery and performing routine fish culture duties such as feeding fish, cleaning and caring for fish rearing vessels, and maintaining grounds and equipment.
Qualifications: 
Applicants must be able to work independently and follow set protocols while accurately collecting data. Applicants must be detail oriented, self-motivated, and safety conscious. Must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver’s license. Fisheries related experience and education strongly preferred, but not required.
