About the position

The Southeast Region is seeking a Fishery Technician (8 month benefited) to assist with the regional fisheries management program in Pocatello, Idaho and the surrounding area. This unique area offers diverse recreational opportunities including hunting, fishing, biking, and hiking.

General Information: 
Applicant must be willing to accommodate a flexible schedule. Work periods may be up to 7 consecutive days. Housing is NOT provided. Incumbents must be able to lift/carry up to 60 lbs. with occasional lifting/carrying up to 100 lbs. for short distances and work long, strenuous hours in extreme weather conditions with or without reasonable accommodations.
Responsibilities: 
The Fishery Technician is primarily responsible for operating and maintaining a large fish trap and implementing the Department’s Pelican Management Plan. Trapping duties include PIT tagging adfluvial Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout, collecting biological data, and entering and managing data in a series of databases. The trap is located on the upper Blackfoot River above Blackfoot Reservoir near Soda Springs, Idaho. The successful applicant will be required to stay on site during the trapping season. Accommodations consist of a heated wall tent with associated camping gear. Per Diem for groceries will also be provided.

During the trapping time frame (May-June), the fishery technician will also spend time hazing American White Pelicans off of Blackfoot River and Reservoir. These activities require the successful applicant to possess a valid hunter’s safety certificate and to be very familiar with the operation of a shotgun.

The fishery technician will also be required to participate in and occasionally lead other fishery management activities.
Qualifications: 
It is preferred that applicants have a Bachelor's degree in fisheries, biology or other closely related field; or equivalent training and work experience. Individuals with experience in fisheries techniques will be given preference. Proficient in Microsoft applications and experience with using topographical maps/software and GPS is a plus. Must be 18 years of age, possess a valid hunter’s safety certification, and possess a valid driver’s license.
