About the position
The Department of Fish and Game is seeking a Regional Wildlife Biologist - Farm Bill Coordinator to fill a current opening in Lewiston, Idaho.
This position is for a Farm Bill Coordinator located in Lewiston, Idaho. Work will be split between two offices, Idaho Department of Fish and Game's (IDFG) Clearwater regional office in Lewiston and several Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) offices in the region. The position is expected to split it’s time between working with farmers, ranchers and other private landowners to enhance wildlife habitat on private lands throughout the Region with occasional work in the Southwest and Panhandle Regions and working on activities that further the goals of the Idaho elk plan on private property. Primary duties will include outreach, plan development and monitoring of the Western Idaho State Acres For Wildlife Enhancement (SAFE) and Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) as well as working with federal and NGO partners to implement projects benefiting upland gamebirds, deer and elk on private land.
Efforts will focus on developing habitat for upland game birds (primarily pheasant, quail and Columbian Sharp tailed grouse), big game (focus on deer & elk) and riparian habitat that will benefit fisheries.
Key job duties will be providing technical assistance and information on the use of programs available within the federal Farm Bill, such as the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), State Acres for Wildlife Enhancement (SAFE), Agricultural Lands Easement Program and Environmental Quality Incentive Program. It is expected that a portion of this position’s time will focus on implementing the habitat goals within the Idaho Mule Deer Initiative, upland game and elk plans. This will include working with other federal and state agencies as well as private landowners.

- Designs, implements, and monitors wildlife habitat projects on private, federal and/or department lands.
- Develops relationships with private landowners, writes plans, designs and implements projects on private lands.
- Designs and implements wildlife data collection programs.
- Prepares management work plans and annual reports.
- Manages the region's Access Yes! program.
- Reviews environmental assessment reports and impact statements affecting area wildlife populations.
- Trains employees involved in habitat management activities such as, vegetation restoration and monitoring, weed control, water level control, prescribed burning, and habitat inventory.
- Participates in conducting public meetings and hearings on habitat projects and wildlife regulations.
- Develop and maintain cooperative and successful relationships to effect habitat management.
To minimally qualify for these positions, a candidate must have completed a master degree in wildlife management or closely related field OR completion of upper division coursework that resulted in a bachelor degree in wildlife management or a closely related field that includes courses in zoology, wildlife management techniques, wildlife habitat relationships, population dynamics and wildlife behavior AND professional field work equivalent to that received in a master degree program in wildlife management (typically two years).
- Incumbents must be willing to participate and to instruct in hunting activities.
- Experience demonstrating good knowledge of the ecology, habitat requirements, taxonomy, and population dynamics of wildlife.
- Some knowledge of forest, range management OR agricultural wildlife habitat.
- Experience developing, evaluating or implementing management plans or development plans, hunting regulations or species management plans; conducting wildlife field research to include the design, collection and analysis of wildlife data, writing reports, and giving an oral presentation of project results.
- Valid driver's license.
- Experience working with private landowners or grazing leasees on habitat improvement projects.
- Experience with Federal Farm Bill programs.
- Experience collaborating with federal natural resource agencies such as Bureau of Land Management (BLM) or U.S. Forest Services.
