With or without reasonable accommodations, the incumbent must be able to stand for long periods of time, lift and carry ítems weighing up to 50 lbs., hike over rough and rugged terrain, safely drive for multiple hours per shift, and work in adverse weather conditions. The work week is 40 hour, with schedule variable between four ten-hour days a week and five eight hour days a week depending on need. This position may involve some irregular hours including early mornings, late evenings, overnight camping, and possible weekend work. There is onsite housing provided.
This position, with the direction of the RWHB, will work as a team leader and will have supervisory responsibilities for 2 to 3 Wildlife Technicians. The position will perform the physical and technical duties regarding wildlife habitat management on the POWMA. Primary tasks include habitat improvement projects such as preparation, planting and maintenance of annual food plots and perennial cover, noxious weed control, fence construction/maintenance, conducting wildlife and vegetation surveys, waterfowl trapping and banding, facilities and access site maintenance and monitoring and facilitating public use of the Department properties. Position requires the use and maintenance of ATVs, tractors, boats, herbicide spray equipment, light construction and equipment maintenance skills. Other duties as assigned.
The applicant must have completed at least two years of college coursework in an accredited wildlife biology program or closely related field and possess a valid driver’s license. Strong preference will be given to individuals who have: Some experience supervising others. Some knowledge of wildlife survey methods acquired through coursework or experience. The ability to accurately identify wildlife species. Some knowledge of vegetation survey methods and plant taxonomy. The ability to follow instructions, complete assignments, and operate with little direct supervision. The ability to interact with the general public, other agency personnel, and other employees in a courteous fashion.
Applicants may be given additional consideration if they have experience in: Supervising a seasonal crew. Upland and wetland plant identification and vegetation sampling in the Inland Northwest. GIS skills. Performing habitat improvement activities using standard farming equipment. Sampling small mammals, and/or songbirds, using power tools and completing small construction projects.
