About the position

Wildlife Habitat Technician for the Southeast Region of Idaho. This befitted position starts on or about 3/1/2022 (1385 hrs/yr) with flexible start and end dates dependent on workload and selected candidates situation. Candidate will supervise multiple technicians to achieve management goals on each Wildlife Management Area (WMA) and occasionally throughout other areas and projects in the Southeast Region. The largest workload focus anticipated for the 2022 season will be at Blackfoot River WMA, Georgetown Summit WMA, and Sterling WMA.

General Information: 
The position will be based out of the Pocatello Regional Office with duty stations located at the Sterling WMA, Portneuf WMA, Blackfoot River WMA, Georgetown Summit WMA, and Montpelier WMA. Each WMA in the Southeast Region has unique management goals and challenges, and each provides a variety of hunting, fishing, and wildlife watching opportunities year-round.

This position may involve some irregular hours and weekends/ holidays. Candidates must be able to work a variable schedule under adverse weather conditions, steep/uneven terrain, and be able to lift and carry/pack up to 50 lbs. for short distances.
Responsibilities: 
The individual selected for this position will be responsible for assisting the Regional Wildlife Habitat Biologists (RWHB) with the day-to-day operations of the five Southeast Region WMAs, as well as ongoing Regional habitat projects. The individual selected will provide guidance and leadership to 1-3 seasonal technicians during the field season, prioritizing and assigning daily duties, often independently, within the management parameters set by the RWHBs. Close collaboration between RWHBs will be expected, as well as the individual’s invested effort, critical thought and initiative to achieve management goals and improve WMA operations.
Specific duties include but are not limited to:
• Completing habitat treatments as per direction of the RWHBs
• Organizing and assigning duties to seasonal technicians
• Maintain team cohesion, addressing issues as they arise in collaboration with RWHBs
• Foster a good team mentality, emphasizing safe operation, common sense and critical thought
• Coordinate noxious weed control, fence construction/ maintenance, irrigation system set up and take down
• Monitoring and facilitating public use of the properties
• Monitoring habitat treatments
• Assisting with wildlife surveys, trapping, banding, tagging, stocking etc.
• Assisting with vegetation surveys
• Light construction and equipment maintenance
• Other duties as assigned
Qualifications: 
Good knowledge of wildlife ecology and habitat requirements AND some knowledge of wildlife habitat including evaluation and management practices; OR good knowledge of biology, zoology, botany, conservation biology or closely related discipline. Experience recording, summarizing, analyzing, and synthesizing biological data using a personal computer to manage data. Valid driver’s license.
Strong preference will be given to individuals who have:
• Demonstrated leadership/supervisory experience, including organization, delegation and conflict resolution
• Some knowledge of wildlife survey methods acquired through coursework and experience
• The ability to accurately identify wildlife species
• Some knowledge of vegetation survey methods and basic plant taxonomy
• The ability to follow instructions, complete assignments, and operate with little direct supervision
• The physical ability to engage in strenuous work for extended periods of time including work in adverse weather conditions and work involving lifting/carrying heavy loads
• The ability to interact with the general public, other agency personnel, and other employees in a professional and courteous fashion
• Willing to work safely and responsibly with various types of herbicides, and willing to test and receive an Idaho pesticide applicators license
• Safely operate farm equipment and heavy equipment, 4x4 vehicles, ATV’s, trailers
Applicants will be given additional consideration if they have experience:
• Performing habitat improvement activities
• Knowledge of flood and sprinkler irrigation, fence construction and maintenance, and general farming/ranching practices
• Familiarity with basic maintenance on large and small machinery and engines
• Using power tools and completing small construction projects
• Identifying upland and wetland plants
• Familiarity with waterfowl ID and basic life history
• Sampling vegetation in upland/wetland habitats
• Safe, accurate handling and application of herbicides for vegetation control. Current applicators license is strongly preferred but not required prior to hiring. Must obtain within 4 months of start date.
