Description: Lake Cascade is rimmed on the east by open fields and on the west by coniferous forest. When the reservoir is full in summer, it is best to observe from the road; when it is drawn down in the spring, fall, and winter, you can walk the shoreline. Mudflats around the reservoir are good for viewing migrating shorebirds and waterfowl. The numerous small streams and ponds that dot the mudflats provide a vast open area for waterbirds until the reservoir fills. Waterbirds are the main attraction, but avoid all nesting areas from Feb 15-July 15. Birds that can be seen include Bald Eagle, Osprey,
Swainson’s and Rough-legged Hawks, Tundra and Trumpeter Swans, American White Pelican, Western and Pied-billed
Grebes, Common and Pacific Loons, Sora, Virginia Rail, Marsh Wren, and Snow and Ross’s Geese.
