Ice fishing lets you catch fish throughout winter, and it’s a unique and fun way to go fishing with your family and friends. All you need is fishing gear, a few pieces of special equipment and a basic understanding of ice safety.
As of Jan. 16, ice thickness is around 6.5 inches in front of Van Wyck (ID Parks and Rec.) boat ramp in Cascade, with about a foot of snow and/or snow and slush on top . A couple hundred yards from the shoreline, slush conditions improve, but travel is still difficult.
The 11th Annual Youth Ice Fishing Day at Horsethief Reservoir is just around the corner and kids and their parents are invited to spend a fun-filled day on the ice, fishing for rainbow trout. Sponsored by Idaho Youth Outdoors, Idaho Fish and Game and a host of others, this free event kicks off at 10:00am on Saturday, January 11, wrapping up at 3:00pm.
On Dec. 17, the ONLY ice cover is on the north end of the lake from the Gold Fork arm north. Typically, Lake Cascade is frozen over by the end of December, and this year looks like it is on track to do that.
Henrys lake has been hot this year for anglers and being covered with ice hasn't changed that. Due to the cold snap this October, the lake froze a bit earlier than usual. Some individuals were seen venturing onto the newly formed ice as early Halloween.
