Shooters may use any good condition lever-action tubular magazine rifle chambered for any rimmed pistol cartridge firing a flat-nosed bullet. Common calibers include .22 rimfire, .22 magnum, .25-20, .32-20, .38-40, .38 special, .357 magnum, .44-40, .44 magnum and .45 Colt. Other requirements include open or peep sights, with no extended rear sight and a “post” front sight.
These matches are typically a team sport, with a spotter advising the shooter of hits and misses. All shooting is done “off hand” and the shooter has two minutes to knock down a bank of five targets. Each participant shoots a 40-round match at these distances: 40 yards-chickens, 50 yards-pigs, 75 yards-turkeys, 100 yards-rams.
Pistol Cartridge Cowboy Lever-action Rifle matches alternate months with Cowboy Lever-action Rifle matches and are held on the first Saturday of the month (except July) beginning at 9:00am. These matches usually end around noon, and are followed by a Small Bore Cowboy Rifle match. Check the monthly calendar to confirm date and time. New shooters are always welcome at this event. Cost to participate is minimal ($15 for adults, $5 for youth). Spectators are also welcome at no cost
