Idaho's fish and wildlife resources belong to you. It's our job to understand how you think we're doing managing your resources to meet opportunities important to you, and what changes you might suggest for the Department.
During February and March, Fish and Game’s fisheries managers around the state will work with the public to shape fishing proposals: upcoming statewide fishing seasons and rules through 2021, and updating Idaho’s long-term fisheries management plan.
This is the scoping phase of the process. It’s when we gather public feedback about their ideas. It’s about the big picture management directions and fishing opportunities.
Fishing Rules: The purpose of these meetings are for IDFG staff to listen to public ideas and to pass along some of their own. Come share your thoughts about what kind of fishing opportunities or experiences you would like, and where. What's working? What's not working?
Be more prepared to explain what type of fishing opportunity you would like than to identify the regulation you want. We won't be discussing specific rules or presenting past data, it's just an open forum for the public to speak directly to staff - have a conversation. The Department will take that feedback, examine the social and biological components of the proposal, and consider regulations that may help to achieve the desired outcome. Any proposed regulation changes will be considered by the Commission prior to bringing them out to the public.
Remember, telling the Department you want a slot limit could mean a lot of things so be prepared to tell us what outcome is important to you.
Management Plan: The Five Year Fisheries Management Plan is a plan reviewed and approved by the IDFG Commission. It's a commitment to the public that outlines specific fishery objectives and management direction. It also provides management staff time needed to accomplish management shifts and measure their effectiveness. Take a look at the current management plan (found under the fishing tab on the IDFG website) and let us know if you think we should be modifying priorities or rethinking current management strategies.
Can't make the meeting? For Magic Valley Rules and Management Plan comments you can email comments to MVFishery@idfg.idaho.gov; Call: 208-324-4359, or go online and submit comments.
We will come back to the public in early summer (June) during the “comment” phase when/if specific rule modifications are needed to meet public demands. The comment phase is when we ask folks what rule options they prefer, including no change.
