Various ducks, Sora, and some shorebirds can be seen here as well. At mile 48.3, check the sewage ponds to the south for Wood Duck. In downtown Elk City, check the willows and wetlands surrounding the rodeo grounds for Sora, Wilson’s Snipe, Willow Flycatcher, and Yellow Warbler. For forest birds, check out the “blue diamond” hiking/snowmobile trail that starts 0.1 mile past the Elk City Ranger Station (follow the signs to the station). Look for Pileated and American Three-toed Woodpeckers, Western Tanager, and Pine Grosbeak. At Red River WMA, breeding waterfowl in the spring, and during summer, look for Spotted Sandpiper, Violet-green Swallow, Willow Flycatcher, Warbling Vireo, and Savannah Sparrow. Hike the edge of meadows surrounded by Englemann spruce/lodgepole pines for Spruce Grouse. 4.3 miles past the WMA, at the Red River Chinook Viewing Area (look for signs), keep an eye out for Vaux’s Swift and American Dipper.
