Fish and Game is preparing for emergencies by stockpiling feed and convening winter feeding advisory committees. Feed pellets and other supplies are stored in strategic locations around the state where Fish and Game may need to feed, but that decision isn’t taken lightly, nor should it be.
Idaho Fish and Game will be gathering public input on new moose, bighorn sheep, and mountain goat season proposals starting Dec. 19. Proposals are expected to be posted on Dec. 19, and the comment period will run through Jan. 9, 2025 at 6 p.m.
Avian influenza remains a threat to wild birds across Idaho, and Idaho Fish and Game is aware of several locations reporting cases of wild bird die-offs. Sick and dead wild geese have been reported in the Lake Lowell, Parma and Fort Boise areas of the Treasure Valley, and the number of dead birds is estimated to be in the thousands.
While winter might put a stop to fish stocking in most of the state, the fish keep coming in the southern portion of the Southwest Region in December. Between the Boise River and several Treasure Valley community ponds, more than 3,000 fish will be stocked in the Southwest Region this month – so bundle up and get after them!

Idaho Fish and Game and the City of McCall are planning to submit a funding proposal for a project to improve conditions at an existing access area on the North Fork Payette River in McCall.
Nearly every year, there is a boating accident in Idaho involving duck hunters or winter anglers. With water temperatures just above freezing, these accidents can tragically result in a fatality. In the past 10 years nearly 67% of the fatal boating accidents in Idaho were the result of victims falling into the water from small boats.
Beginning in mid-December, Idaho Fish and Game staff will begin low-level helicopter surveys to get a closer look at deer numbers in the Salmon and Challis areas. The flights will be completed in big game management units 21, 21A, 27, 28 and 36B are expected to take a week if the weather permits.
