Summer Chinook salmon

Most "wildlife watchers" look for mammals and birds - but they are missing great opportunities to view fish in Idaho's waters.  Late summer and fall is the time to see Chinook salmon spawning in Idaho rivers in the Upper Salmon River at places like Indian Riffles (between Challis and Stanley), Sawtooth Fish Hatchery, on the South Fork Salmon River at the fish trap and in Stolle Meadows or the Clearwater Basin at IDFG spawning facilities.

It's also a great time of the year to view early-spawning kokanee salmon  in the South and Middle Fork Boise rivers, Deadwood River, Mores Creek and tributaries to Dworshak Reservoir.  They are easy to see with their bright green heads and deep red bodies.
